Nyhavn

Hotel d’Angleterre is located 300 meters from Nyhavn, the city’s 17th-century colourful waterfront, canal and entertainment district. Stretching from Kongens Nytorv to the harbor front just south of the Royal Theatre and close to d’Angleterre, Nyhavn is lined with brightly coloured 17th- and early 18th-century townhouses, housing bars, cafés and restaurants. Serving as a “heritage harbor,” the canal has many historical wooden ships and several famous Danes have lived in Nyhavn over the years. Among them are the Danish artist H.G.F Holm and the Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. Nyhavn was originally established by the Danish King Christian 5th in the 1670s. At that time, it was the first expansion of Copenhagen in 450 years. When it was built, it served as a gateway from the sea to the old inner city at Kongens Nytorv, where ships handled cargo and fishermen’s catch. Thus, sailor pubs and prostitution dominated Nyhavn for many years. Today it is the most visited waterfront area in Denmark, popular with both tourists and Copenhageners.
