Located just a few steps from the front doors of d’Angleterre, Strøget is one of the longest pedestrian shopping areas in Europe and is a popular tourist attraction in the centre of town. Strøget runs between the town square by Copenhagen City Hall (Rådhuspladsen) and The King's New Square (Kongens Nytorv) where d’Angleterre is located. Many of the city's most famous and exclusive stores, such as Illums Bolighus, Magasin du Nord, the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory, and several designer shops, are located along Strøget, while many of the smaller and exclusive Danish brands can be found in the small side streets to Strøget. There are also a multitude of souvenir shops and high street shops. Strøget became officially “car–free” in 1962, as part of a major urban planning initiative in Copenhagen, which put more emphasis on pedestrians and cyclist access to the city.
