JACOB GILS is a Danish photographer, born in 1963. Renowned for his innovative approach, Jacob explores the theoretical and technical limits of photography, seeking to unlock the medium's full potential. The challenges he encounters sharpen his creativity and drive his artistic vision.
Whether capturing iconic structures, landscapes, or the female form, Jacob Gils creates visual puzzles that speak a unique language. Moving beyond snapshot photography and popular genres, he employs a distinctive technique of layering multiple prints of the same subject, often overlapping them. This method allows viewers to look through the image, determining focus and revealing movement. The resulting compositions are vibrant, combining transparency and blur to evoke a sense of dynamism.
About the Series “Movement”: The series Movement was developed out of an interest in pushing the boundaries of the photographic medium and was originally conceived as an experiment into the potential of the photographic genre. Each piece consists of many fleeting moments layered into one image, creating a painterly finesse that conveys a feeling of time and space through multiple exposures. The motifs often draw from nature, reflecting a personal and specific connection. What may initially appear abstract or out of focus is, in fact, a meticulous assembly of sharp images. This visually poetic and dynamic balance characterizes my photographic style, echoing impressionist painting while maintaining the detail of modern photography. In recognition of his exceptional work, Jacob Gils was awarded the ERARTA Prize in 2024 during Zona Maco, one of the largest accolades ever given at an art fair, further cementing his status in the contemporary art world.
Exhibitions and Collections: His work is featured in prominent institutions, including The National Museum of Photography in Oslo, The National Museum of Photography in Copenhagen, Fotografiska in Stockholm, the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá, Nanjing Museum of Visual Arts in China, and The Danish Cultural Center in Beijing.
